Officially opened in 1984, this acute general hospital serves the Eastern New Territories region. In addition, it is the teaching hospital of the Medical Faculty of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and a midwifery school is attached to it. It is the location of the Sir Yue Kong Pao Centre for Cancer and the Lady Pao Children's Cancer Centre, two state-of-the art facilities for cancer treatment, research and education, as well as the Jockey Club Trauma & Emergency Centre, which provides integrated emergency care to patients suffering from traumatic injuries and critical illness, and its outpatient services are supported by the Li Ka Shing Specialist Clinics.
